6 Nobel laureates and more than 300 professors and researchers from universities worldwide have joined the campaign titled University4Iran, an international mobilization against the violent repression that took place on university campuses from summer 2009 in the Islamic Republic of Iran.

The campaign consists of an open letter addressed to the Supreme Leader of Iran Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

The University4Iran campaign supports the requests already addressed by a group of 88 professors from the University of Tehran (Faculty of Technology):

1) Punish and put on trial any individual who is responsible for the campus attacks.
2) Release all imprisoned students.
3) Respect the neutrality and inviolability of the university campus as a place of dialogue, study, and research.

The University4Iran campaign is being published in conjunction with the first anniversary of the brutal attacks by pro-government militia members to the University of Tehran dormitories in 2009 on the night of June 14th and 15th. Several students were killed in the attacks and many others were injured or arrested.

Students and professors have been main targets of repression by Iranian government authorities for the entire year that followed the disputed 2009 Iranian Presidential election. The University4Iran campaign aims to express the concerns of the international academic world who is outraged by the continuous abusive situation that haunts Iranian university campuses. This campaign stands in solidarity with the teachers, researchers, and students from Iranian universities.
