Iran murders prisoner under torture in Gohardasht Prison
HRA
According to reports, a prisoner was killed after violent torture in a solitary cell in cellblock 1 in Gohardasht (Rajayi Shahr) Prison in Karaj.
On Wednesday, August 11, prisoner Hassan Qashqayi, 35, was transferred to solitary where he was violently tortured after coming back from court. He was tortured for a prolonged amount of time blindfolded while his hands and feet were shackled. He went into a coma and died after a few hours.
Hassan Qashqayi had resisted the pressure and bullying of security forces and was arrested in Varamin after clashing with security forces. He is from the Qashqayi Tribe and has been jailed for about 5 years. He was detained in cellblock 4 in Gohardasht Prison for a few months. Qashqayi was then transferred to the notorious cellblock 1 for no apparent reason. Judiciary asks Khamenei to hang more than 1000 prisoners in secret letter

According to reports, the head of the Judiciary has requested clearance for the execution of 1,120 people in a confidential letter to Ali Khamenei.
According to a report by Sadeq Larijani to the leader, death sentences have been issued for 1,120 people which have been confirmed by the Supreme Court and the Judiciary is waiting for clearance from the leader to carry out the sentences.
From 2005 until now, the numbers of executions have increased every year and despite claims from Iranian officials, the numbers of executions have not been able to lower the crime rate and crime rate is on the rise…
Executions and the noose have always been the solution for many problems for politicians in the Islamic Republic. For example in the ninth presidential elections in Iran, Ali Larijani who was the candidate for the traditional fundamentalists who is currently the parliament speaker, said in answer to a question regarding improper veiling from a supporter that he believed that if an improperly veiled girl was executed in public, the problem of improper veiling would be uprooted! Female political prisoner sentenced to death for links to PMOI

An informed source said that a death sentence has been issued for Farah Vazehan who was arrested after Ashura.
On August 4, there were reports that the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court sentenced her to 15 years of prison but this informed source said that she was actually sentenced to death.
This source, who asked not to be named, said that Vazehan’s family did not inform her of her death sentence to prevent her from becoming unhappy.
This sentence was issued by Judge Salavati in the 15th branch of the Revolutionary Court and is an initial sentence.
Farah Vazehan is currently in the Public Female Cellblock in Evin Prison and has been in temporary detention for 7 months. She was arrested in her home two days after Ashura on December 29, 2009.
She has been charged with participating in street protests and ‘waging war with God by cooperating with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran’. She lived outside of the country for many years and only came back to Iran to be at the side of her 19 year old daughter who has cancer and is undergoing chemotherapy. (Committee of Human Rights Reporters – Aug. 10, 2010)
Female political prisoner kept under hard conditions in Evin Prison
According to reports, political prisoners Elmira (Farah) Vazehan who was arrested after Ashura events is held in an undetermined state and under hard conditions in the female cellblock in Evin Prison.
She was arrested after widespread popular protests on Ashura (Dec. 27, 2009) by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence in her home along with her two children. She was taken to a secret Ministry of intelligence detention center where she was under constant torture for one month. She was interrogated three times in one month for several hours. This political prisoner was physically and mentally tortured in her interrogations. This detention center had dark cold corridors and lacked minimum facilities. The moans and cries of other prisoner who were being tortured could be heard day and night in this secret detention center.
After 30 days of torture, she was taken to a solitary cell in cellblock 209 in Evin prison where she was interrogated by an intelligence agent nicknamed Alavi. He was also in charge of interrogating her two children.
Her daughter has lymph cancer and is in critical condition. But agents of the Ministry of Intelligence detained her for a few days and interrogated and tortured her to force her to make confessions against her mother. They were forced to release her because of her deteriorating condition.
Farah Vazehan was banned from calling her family while in the secret detention center. Even when she was taken to cellblock 209 where she shared a cell with other prisoners she was still banned from contacting her family. This is while her daughter was very sick and Vazehan desperately needed to known about her condition.
She is currently detained in the female cellblock in Evin Prison and is still kept in an undetermined state after 8 months. She has been charged with taking pictures and films of protests and having communications with the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran…
Notably, Farah Vazehan’s uncle was hanged in the 80’s in prison and a number of her other family members including her sister were arrested and violently tortured in the arrests made in the 80’s. (Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran – Aug. 11, 2010)

Imminent risk of execution

Iran's Supreme Court has rejected Ja'far Kazemi's request to appeal against his death sentence. The sentence was imposed for his alleged participation in anti-government demonstrations and links with a banned organization. His sentence may be carried out at any time. Six other people with alleged links to the same organization are said to be under sentence of death.
Ja’far Kazemi was arrested on 18 September 2009 and interrogated and possibly tortured for months in Evin prison in Tehran. He was accused of participating in protests which followed the disputed outcome of Iran’s presidential election in June 2009, but was not accused of committing any violent acts; and for his alleged contact with banned OPPOSITION group the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI). He was sentenced to death for “enmity against God”, and is also believed to have been convicted of “propaganda against the system”. On 26 April, he learned that his death sentence had been confirmed by an appeal court. A further appeal was apparently rejected in late July. Amnesty International is aware of six other men sentenced to death in Iran for alleged links to the PMOI.
Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaei, Ali Saremi (or Sarami), Abdolreza Ghanbari, Ahmad Daneshpour Moghaddam and Mohsen Daneshpour Moghaddam were reportedly also found guilty of “enmity against God”, possibly in the same case as Ja'far Kazemi. Information received on 4 August indicated that another man, Javad Lari, a merchant in the Tehran bazaar, had been sentenced to “death, without pardon” for “enmity against God.” He is also held in Evin prison, where he was reportedly tortured and forced to ‘confess’.

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Ja’far Kazemi is reported to have been interrogated by security forces for months, and was pressured to make a televised “confession”, which he refused to do. He was previously imprisoned for membership of the PMOI in the 1980s or 1990s. One of his sons is a PMOI member and lives in Camp Ashraf, which houses PMOI members in Iraq. On 1 August, his wife, Roudabeh visited the Judiciary’s office in order to deliver a letter. They refused to accept it and informed her that the death sentence would be carried out.
Tehran’s prosecutor announced on 15 May that the death sentences of Ja’far Kazemi, Mohammad Ali Haj Aghaei, Mohammad Ali Saremi (or Sarami), Abdolreza Ghanbari (or Qanbari) and father and son, Ahmad and Mohsen Daneshpour Moghaddam, were upheld by the Appeal Court after they were found guilty of “enmity against God” in relation to their alleged links to the PMOI. In some cases, these links may amount to no more than having contact with family members linked to the PMOI…
Two women, Motahareh (Simin) Bahrami and Rayhaneh Haj Ebrahim, and one other man,
Teacher Abdolreza Ghanbari, aged 42, was arrested after the demonstrations which took place in later December 2009 marking the Ashoura religious commemorations, in which he was accused of participating. Held in section 2A of Evin Prison, which is under the control of the Revolutionary Guards, he was tried on 30 January 2010 and made a “confession” which is believed to have been made under duress.
Ali Saremi (or Sarami), aged 62, has a son in the PMOI who lives in Camp Ashraf, Iraq, whom he has visited. Ali Saremi has spent 23 years in prison for his political activities both before and after the 1979 Islamic Revolution in Iran (see http://www.amnesty.org/en/library/info/MDE13/007/2010/en.)
