Rajayi Shahr Prison officials intensify noise transmissions endangering prisoners’ health

Prison officials have seriously increased noise transmission at Rajayi Shahr [Gohardasht] Prison which has harmful effects on political prisoners.
According to reports, in the past few days, noise transmissions which are used to prevent prisoners from using cell phones have been increased in hall 12 in Rajayi Shahr Prison.
The noise, which endangers the health of prisoners, has led to dryness of the mucus, muscle pain and headaches among political prisoners. (Human Rights Activists in Iran – Nov. 4, 2012)

Political prisoners under increased pressure as a result of noise transmission at Gohardasht Prison
According to reports, interrogators of the Intelligence Agency have increased noise transmission from four sides of the hall where political prisoners are kept in Gohardasht [Rajayi Shahr] Prison which has led to serious problems for these prisoners.
Strong noise transmission devices have been installed around Hall 12 Section 4 in Gohardasht Prison in Karaj which transmits noise to this small isolated hall on a 24 hour basis. More than 60 prisoners are detained in this hall. The noise is so strong that it affects state-run radio and TV channels.
Since the beginning of the noise transmissions, all political prisoners have been suffering from dizziness, headaches, nausea, fatigue and severe mental pressure. These transmissions can also cause cancer.
Protests from political prisoners against this inhuman measure have not brought any reactions from prison authorities. All the political prisoners in Hall 12 have written letters to the head of this prison Mohammad Mardani demanding a let up of the transmissions. Judiciary to shut down only independent law union in Iran
The Mehr state-run News Agency reported on Wednesday that a judicial official in Tehran had issued a warrant for the closure of the Union of the Center for Lawyers. This sentence was to be carried out this morning but the police have still not taken any measures… Critics say that the Iranian Judicial System previously intended to control this union by interfering in its elections and installing people close to the government or issuing laws that would limit its activities. A number of the members of the Lawyer’s Center including Nasrin Sotudeh have been sentenced to prison in relation to their work and defending their clients and are now serving their term. Jailed Christian man in poor health denied treatment

According to reports, Irani, who is detained in Section 2, Hall 7 in Karaj’s [Gohardasht] Prison, is suffering from severe intestine hemorrhage and his condition has deteriorated since his transfer to this prison.
Doctors say the reason behind his illness is stress, malnutrition and not going to the restroom on time. In the past few days, Behnam Irani fainted and was unconscious for a few hours.
His only method of treatment is hospitalization and surgery but he has not received any kind of medical attention is prison and tolerates the pain with sedatives.
This Christian man is allowed to see his family from behind a glass partition every other week.
He was arrested in 2006 for his Christian activities on charges of holding prayer ceremonies, worshipping at his home and evangelical activities and was detained for a few months until he was released on bail.
On February 23, 2008, the 30th branch of the Tehran Court of Appeals sentenced him to a five year suspended prison term on charges of ‘acting against national security’.
Subsequently on April 14, 2010, security forces stormed his home and arrested him. He was beaten and mistreated upon his arrest.
This time, he was sentenced to one year of prison on charges of ‘propagating against the government’ and his five year prison term was also implemented.
Prison officials have so far refused to grant him a medical leave and have denied him medical treatment in prison. (Human Rights Activists in Iran – Nov. 4, 2012)

Blogger killed under torture after a week of detention

The Tehran Fata Police said in answer to the inquiries of the family of jailed blogger Satar Beheshti that he had died in a detention center.
One of the members of the Satar Family said in an interview that during the inquiries today by the husband of Satar Beheshti’s sister, state security forces announced that they should come to the Kahrizak morgue for his body.
Satar Beheshti was a blogger and internet activist who was arrested on Tuesday October 30 after the Fata Police went to his home in Robat Karim. He was taken to an unknown location.
Beheshti was active in social networks such as Facebook and was also a blogger.
“After this was announced to his sister’s husband [security forces] called his family and summoned them to the Tehran Security Police Station in Shariati Street and in answer to our question on what had happened to him they told us that we had no right to ask and that we should shut up”, this informed source said.
“Satar Beheshti had no previous ailments and was also healthy at the time of his arrest”, the source stressed. (Human Rights Activists in Iran – Nov. 6, 2012)

Call for UN probe Jailed netizen Sattar Beheshti dies after prison interrogation
Reporters Without Borders is deeply shocked to learn of the death two days ago of the netizen Sattar Beheshti < http://magalh91.blogspot.co.uk/>, six days after he was arrested and taken into custody in Tehran. His family learned of the tragic news in a message to his mother asking her to collect the body the next day. Beheshti was believed to have died under torture while he was being interrogated.
Reporters Without Borders urges the Iranian authorities to clarify the exact circumstances of the netizen’s death and calls on the international community not to allow this crime to go unpunished.
‘The Tehran government is an egregious example of the triumph of impunity,' the press freedom organization said. 'Up to now, no-one responsible for the deaths in detention of any journalists or netizens has been brought to justice.
‘We ask that the special UN rapporteur on human rights in Iran, Ahmed Shaheed, be allowed to enter Iran to conduct an independent investigation into this death and other similar cases.’
Beheshti, a 35-year-old worker and political activist, was arrested at his home on 30 October by the FTA, Iran’s cyber police, for 'actions against national security on social networks and Facebook', before being taken to an unknown location. Security officers seized his computer. Beheshti was known to the police and had already been arrested during the student riots in 2002.
According to information received by Reporters Without Borders, the family came under pressure to bury the body quickly and was ordered under threat not to inform the media.
The 54-year-old Canadian-Iranian journalist Zahra Kazem < http://en.rsf.org/iran-impunity-continues-seven-years-09-07-2010, 37908.html> also died under torture while in detention in Iran, on 10 July 2003. She had been arrested on June 23 June while she was photographing the families of inmates outside Evin prison.
The blogger Omidreza Mirsayafi, arrested on 7 February 2009, died on 18 March 2009 in disturbing circumstances.
Hoda Saber < http://en.rsf.org/iran-iranian-authorities-responsible-15-06-2011, 40455.html>, the 52-year-old former editor of Iran-e-Farda imprisoned in August 2010, died of a heart attack the following year. According to fellow prisoners in block 350 at Evin prison, 'the prison authorities did not do what was necessary to transfer him to hospital in time, and he was mistreated by the staff of the Evin prison infirmary.’
The journalist had begun a hunger strike on 2 June 2011 in protest against the tragic death of fellow journalist Haleh Sahabi after she was physically attacked by an intelligence ministry official at the funeral of her father, opposition politician Ezatollah Sahabi. (Reporters Without Borders- Nov. 8, 2012)

France demands explanation of Iranian blogger's death
France on Thursday called on the Iranian authorities to explain the death in custody of a blogger who, opposition activists say, was killed by torture for criticising the regime on the Internet.
A French foreign ministry spokesman said Paris was 'profoundly shocked' to have learned of the death in custody of 35-year-old Sattar Beheshti.
‘We call on the Iranian authorities to shed as much light as possible on the circumstances of his death’.
‘The repression of peacefully expressed dissident voices in Iran is unacceptable’.
According to opposition groups, Beheshti's family were asked on Wednesday to collect his body from the Kahrizak detention centre in Tehran, where he had been held since being arrested on October 30.
In the last blog he wrote before his arrest, Beheshti had said he was being constantly harassed by telephone by members of the security services.
‘Yesterday they threatened to tell my mother that she would soon be wearing black if I did not shut up, ' he wrote. (AFP –Nov. 8, 2012)

Iran must immediately investigate blogger’s death in custody
Fears that Sattar Beheshti died as a result of torture in an Iranian detention facility, after apparently lodging a complaint about torture are very plausible, given Iran’s track record when it comes to deaths in custody.
The Iranian authorities must investigate the circumstances that led to the death of a blogger in detention in the capital Tehran, Amnesty International urged amid reports he was tortured in custody.
Sattar Beheshti, 35, was arrested by men believed to be from Iran’s Cyber Police on 30 October at his home in Robat Karim, southwest of Tehran.
On Tuesday 6 November his family members were told to collect his body from Tehran’s Kahrizak detention facility, and he was buried the following day. The exact time and cause of his death are still unknown, but a complaint he apparently lodged with prison authorities before his death stated that he had been beaten, lending credence to reports that he died as a result of torture in detention last week.
‘Fears that Sattar Beheshti died as a result of torture in an Iranian detention facility, after apparently lodging a complaint about torture are very plausible, given Iran’s track record when it comes to deaths in custody,’ said Ann Harrison, Amnesty International’s Deputy Middle East and North Africa Programme Director.
‘The Iranian authorities must immediately carry out an independent investigation into his death, including whether torture played a part in it. Anyone found responsible for abuses must be brought to justice in proceedings meeting international fair trial standards, without resort to the death penalty.’
Beheshti, who was not particularly well-known among Iranian bloggers, maintained a site called My Life for My Iran, on which he criticized the Iranian government.
The day before his arrest, he had complained about receiving a threat because of his blog posts:
‘They sent me a message saying, ‘Tell your mother she will soon be wearing black because you don’t shut your big mouth’.’
Once in custody, Beheshti was reportedly detained at Kahrizak detention centre before being moved to Tehran’s Evin prison, where he filed a complaint against his interrogators. In the complaint, which has been made public, the blogger stated that he had been arrested without an arrest warrant and that his interrogators had tortured him - including by tying him to a table and kicking him in the head, although it is not clear where the alleged torture happened.
Media reports have suggested that when in Evin Prison, he had injuries consistent with having been hung by his wrists from the ceiling and spent some time in the prison clinic before being transferred to an unknown location on the evening of 1 November.
According to Beheshti’s family, he had been in good health before his arrest and detention.
Ongoing torture concerns
The Iranian authorities acknowledged that at least three other detainees at Kahrizak detention centre died as a result of torture or other ill-treatment after arrest during a government ’crackdown that followed Irans 2009 presidential elections. At least one other man is also reported to have died at the same time.
Former prisoners held at Tehran’s Evin Prison confirm that torture and other ill-treatment are routinely carried out in some sections of the facility. Previous cases of death in custody have not been fully investigated in independent and impartial proceedings.
Among them was Zahra Kazemi, a photojournalist with dual Canadian-Iranian nationality who was held in Evin Prison and died in 2003 from beatings sustained after her arrest. A Ministry of Intelligence official was subsequently acquitted of her murder, the only one of five officials initially arrested to be charged and tried.
'The Iranian authorities must take immediate action to improve prison conditions and to ensure that all prisoners and detainees in their custody are protected against torture and other ill-treatment and are treated humanely at all times. There must be accountability for human rights violations committed behind the closed doors of prisons, ' said Harrison.
Amnesty International has recently highlighted the case of nine women prisoners at Evin who have undertaken a hunger strike to protest against their ill-treatment - including sexual abuse - in detention. (Amnesty International – Nov. 8, 2012)

Secretariat of the National Council of Resistance of Iran :

Political prisoner, Sattar Beheshti, 35, was killed eight days after his arrest under the torture of the mullahs’ regime henchmen. On Tuesday October 30th at noon, agents of the mullahs’ Ministry of Intelligence (MOIS) under the name of Internet Control Police, raided his home, arrested him and took him to an undisclosed location. He was a detainee of the student uprising of 1999 and after his release, because of his anti-regime stance, has been hated by the religious fascism ruling Iran.

Torturers put him under the most severe tortures in order to obtain forced confession such that witnesses said his body was “crushed” due to torture marks. While torture marks were clearly evident on all of Sattar’s body, the regime’s henchmen mentioned illness as the cause of his death, who according to his relatives was quite healthy.

Sattar Beheshti wrote in his blog before his arrest: “Yesterday they threatened me to tell my mother that soon she has to wear black (mourning) dress, you don’t shut your wide mouth … we do whatever we want ,,, you must shut up and should not inform otherwise you’d be strangled, anonymously! … day and night threatening phone calls do not stop … As an Iranian I say I can not remain silent in the face of all these miseries. I say that you talk too much and with these incredible nonsense, you have destroyed the country. I will not remain silent even if it is my death moment. Wherever I am in the world and whoever the threats come from, it is not important for me. Guys, close your mouths, do not oppress so we don’t reveal.
… Everyday arrests, torture, prison and mass executions are not mentioned. They put political prisoners in the worst situation to break them … they say we would arrest girls and family members. This is their slogan. We arrest, we torture … why don’t you come down of your rule? … Don’t arrest, don’t torture, don’t slaughter, then we will not inform. Otherwise not only we will inform, but also soon your oppressive system will fall on your head … We must know we are born once and we will depart once, so better to live in dignity and to die with pride.”

The Iranian resistance pays tribute to this political prisoner and expresses solidarity with his family, warns against the threats to life of political prisoners, who are imprisoned in the mullahs’ dungeons, and urges the referral of the appalling human rights violations dossier of the Iranian regime to the United Nations Security Council and trial of its blood-shedding leaders in international courts for crimes against humanity.
