Human rights activist Shiva Nazar Ahari has not celebrated two consecutive Father’s Days at home. Last year when Shiva was behind bars in ward 209 of Evin prison, she used the pen and paper her interrogator left behind in her cell to write a letter to her father. When she was temporarily released for a few months, she delivered the letter.
The Committee of Human Rights Reporters published the letter on Father’s Day of this year while Shiva remains detained in prison. On June 20, 2010, Shiva Nazar Ahari was transferred from ward 209 to the public ward in Evin prison.

Dad, Stay Strong

By SHIVA NAZAR AHARI

I was not there on Mother’s Day to kiss my mom’s hands and now I am not there for you on Father’s Day. Dear dad, there is only one day designated to you out of the 365 days. Let your tears roll down through the crevices of my loneliness. Let your tears drown me amidst all the crimes that I have not committed.
Dad, go ahead and cry. It is your right to pour out pain. It has been months since I slept in the room next to yours. You have no news of your daughter. This is your day and, once again, I am not there. Dad, despite all the resistance I am putting forth, my hands are still missing your hands. Dad, my shoulders still crave your shoulders. Even though I have grown up, even though I do my homework in a prison called Evin, and even though I have gained a lot of strength, I still feel like I am missing a part of me when you are not there.
Dear dad, whenever I cross a street, my hands crave for your hands to save me from oncoming traffic. Every morning, I cry with my hands pressed against the walls and I lean on my will power.
You taught me not to break down. Your words and your bedtime stories gave meaning to resistance. You said that injustice will pass and the legend of good people will remain.
I didn’t want to be here. You taught me to be here. I regurgitate your words every day. I don’t want to allow all this loneliness and silence to break me down.
Dad, go ahead and cry, but not for me. Cry for a motherland that sends its best children to prison. But stay strong, dad. My shoulders need the strength of your shoulders. Don’t you let your back bend under pressure or I won’t have anything to lean against. Stay strong, dad.

How A Regime Change In Iran Would Transform The World

Forbes - Imagine how regime change in Iran would utterly transform the world. So many knotty, insuperable obstacles all overcome in one stroke. Let us consider the benefits. They are so glaring that you can be sure President Obama and his advisors have chewed on them at some length.

As Reza Kahlili pointed out in this publication recently, a tremendous amount of U.S., European and Israeli naval hardware is heading to the Persian Gulf at this time. Are we on the brink of war? The time couldn't be more propitious. The Middle East's Sunni states are terrified of Tehran's lengthening shadow. They're begging for an intervention. They will likely even help finance it, as they did the first Gulf War. The Obama administration could use a distraction from oil spill woes and Afghan stalemates. Think of it this way: For each plus regime change would bring, there's an implied minus if the regime endures. The president may have no option.

So how would the world change if Iran were transformed?

--Supply lines to Afghanistan. No more strategic heart attacks whenever Kyrgyzstan convulses or Uzbekistan closes a U.S. base. Iran abuts the stable, Taliban-free western Afghan provinces. With a compliant Tehran, the U.S. can supply the Afghan war straight up from the Persian Gulf through Iran.

--No more toadying to Moscow. Russia holds an effective veto over U.S. supply bases in Moscow's former Soviet colonies bordering Afghanistan. Russia also holds a gun to our heads whenever we need help over curbing Iranian nukes. With a transformed Iran, the U.S. can say no to Moscow's leverage. As a result, from Poland to Georgia a whole swath of the world will finally get U.S. support to complete the process of liberation from Russia.

--Nuclear presence. The Iranian nuke threat will disappear, as will the prospect of the entire Middle East shopping for nuclear deterrents against Iran's threat.

--A freer Iraq. The grisly spectacle of Iraqi Shiite and Kurdish politicians shuttling to Tehran for patronage will abate. Tehran will cease to meddle in Iraqi affairs. The number of car bombs in Baghdad will decline--not least because the regional Sunni fear of Iran will cease to be played out in Iraq.

--A freer Lebanon. No more Hezbollah state within a state. At present Iran buys a distant border with Israel through its Hezbollah clients in southern Lebanon. A twitch from Tehran and Hezbollah fights a war with Israel, thereby destabilizing Lebanon and incessantly roiling the Arab street in the Middle East.

--A securer Israel and freer Gaza. The Iranian regime's support for Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon perpetuates strife in Palestine and gives Israeli hawks a legitimate excuse to postpone peace.

--Cheaper oil. With sanctions gone, Iranian infrastructure can be updated and oil pumped out to the world in vastly increased volume. Absent the constant Iranian threat of blocking the Straits of Hormuz, oil prices will settle for the foreseeable future.

--A freer Central Asia. The enormous reserves of oil and gas on the other side of the Caspian Sea will finally reach the world through a peaceable Iran. Central Asia's access to the West is geographically walled off by Iran and Russia; they have exploited their strategic position in tandem to keep the 'stans impoverished and dependent. Azerbaijan had to build the expensively circuitous Baku-Ceyhan pipeline to circumvent the blockade. Turkmenistan and Kazakhstan still pay to use Russian pipelines to sell their oil and gas. All that will change

--Imperial power. Russia's imperial power will diminish further as oil prices decline and its former Central Asian republics trade with the world directly. Moscow's meddling in the Middle East--selling weapons and building nuclear power stations in Syria--will shrink back to pre-Iraq war size.

--Iran finally free. The Iranian people may need to wade through mountains of rubble to rebuild and count the cost in blood and wealth for some time, as the Iraqis have. But they will, at long last, get a clear path to freedom. Is it better to be freed by the horrors of war than to suffer endless, hopeless repression and torture?

We are lucky in the West that we don't confront such absolute choices in our homeland. We help others confront them at unavoidable points in the world's history. Or so we like to see it. Was the Iraq war unavoidable? We will, no doubt, debate away for decades. But it must be said that a conflict with Iran seems far more inevitable--and necessary--than the one with Iraq. One should remember that such wars are visited on countries by their own leaders who oppress their people, threaten others and hinder global stability. A fair definition of the Tehran regime?

As things stand, President Obama can reorder the world's alignments back in the West's--and America's--favor and give his own tenure a vital boost by confronting Iran directly. Not to do so would seem like cutting off your nose to spite your face. We can add one more, perhaps conclusive, item to the list above, one that never gets mentioned. An Iranian nuclear detonation in the Straits of Hormuz would cause exponentially greater damage there, and chaos to the world's oil tanker lanes, than the conventional capability the regime now wields. The economic fallout would last for years. If you were the president, what would you do?

Demonstrations have taken place in Pakistan's port city of Karachi against the hanging of a militant leader by Iran.

Abdolmalek Rigi was head of the Jundullah militant group.

It says that it is fighting for the rights of minority Sunni Muslims in Iran's Sistan-Baluchistan province.

Iranian authorities say the group is involved in dozens of deadly attacks, including one which killed 40 members of the Revolutionary Guard in 2009.

Impoverished province

Iran says the group, which operates out of Pakistan's Balochistan province, has the support of Pakistani, US and British intelligence agencies.

"Abdolmalek Rigi's only fault was that he spoke for the rights of the Baloch," Abdul Wahab Baloch, who led the demonstration, told the BBC.

Mr Baloch is a leader of the Baloch National Front, an alliance fighting for the rights of the impoverished province.

He was speaking as demonstrators holding posters of Mr Rigi stood by, chanting anti-Iranian slogans.

Mr Baloch said that Mr Rigi was a Baloch hero.

"Jundullah is a Baloch nationalist organisation - it has wrongly been labelled a sectarian group," he said.

"It is fighting for the rights of the Baloch in Iran, which is a largely Shia country.

"That is why we have been called a Sunni group."

Mr Baloch said that Iran had used large-scale repression to crush the Baloch.

"At least 700 Baloch have been hanged in Iran during the last two years," he said.

"They include religious leaders, politicians and intellectuals."

He said his party was in touch with Jundullah and they planned to launch a united front in both Pakistan and Iran.

"We are fighting both Iran and Pakistan for our rights and control of our land," he added.

Nationalist groups in Pakistan have been a thorn in the side of the government for several years.

However, this is the first time they had expressed solidarity with secessionist groups in Iran.

(Reuters) - Congress on Thursday approved tough new unilateral sanctions aimed at squeezing Iran's energy and banking sectors, which could also hurt companies from other countries doing business with Tehran.

The House of Representatives passed the bill 408-8 and sent it to President Barack Obama for signing into law. The Senate had approved it 99-0 earlier in the day.

Congress wants to pressure Tehran into curbing its nuclear program, which Washington suspects is aimed at making a bomb.

U.S. lawmakers from both parties have been pushing for months to tighten U.S. sanctions on Iran. At the Obama administration's request, they held off until the U.N. Security Council and the European Union agreed on new multilateral sanctions. But the lawmakers then declared that still tougher measures were needed.

"The U.N. sanctions, though a good first step, are quite tepid. And they are tepid because there are other members of the Security Council who want to keep doing that business with Iran. ... The United States ... has to pass these unilateral sanctions," Democratic Senator Barbara Mikulski said.

The bill penalizes companies supplying Iran with gasoline as well as international banking institutions involved with Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, its nuclear program or what Washington calls its support for terrorist activity.

It would effectively deprive foreign banks of access to the U.S. financial system if they do business with key Iranian banks or the Revolutionary Guards.

Such banks would be "shut out of the U.S. financial system," said the bill's House author, Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Howard Berman. He is a Democrat.

Global suppliers of gasoline to Iran could also face bans on access to the U.S. banking system, property transactions and foreign exchange in the United States. Iran depends on gasoline imports because it has insufficient refining capacity.

POSING A CHOICE

"Because of this legislation, we will be posing a choice to companies around the world. Do you want to do business with Iran, or do you want to do business with the United States?" Republican Senator John McCain said during Senate debate.

U.S. companies are already prohibited from doing business with Iran. Foreign companies with big investments in Iran's energy sector also can be sanctioned under current U.S. law. But many U.S. lawmakers say this has not been enforced.

Some companies worldwide, such as Italy's oil and gas company Eni and French energy giant Total have been backing away from business with Tehran amid the U.S. drive to isolate Iran.

But other companies are still in business with Iran or considering it. Russia's Gazprom says it is interested in developing the Azar oil field, and industry sources say China has been selling gasoline to Iran.

PRESIDENTIAL WAIVER

The Obama administration failed to get U.S. lawmakers to make blanket exemptions for countries that are cooperating with multilateral efforts to isolate Iran.

The legislation only allows the president to waive the new sanctions on companies from "cooperating" countries on a case-by-case basis, for 12 months.

But even this waiver was too lenient for some House Republicans, who worried Obama will use it.

"The many companies from China and elsewhere, rapidly building Iran's energy facilities today, will be surely exempted from these sanctions," said Representative Ed Royce. He said he would nonetheless vote for the bill.

Russia and China, which have strong economic ties with Tehran and have at times resisted sanctions, supported recent U.N. sanctions. But they fought U.S. efforts to approve tougher measures targeting Iran's energy sector.

The Iranian female blogger Jila Bani Yaghoub received this year’s “Reporters without Borders Award”. The regime in Tehran recently sentenced her to one year in prison and a 30 year professional ban.

According to the verdict of the 26. court of the Tehran Revolutionary Court Bani Yaghoub is guilty of “propaganda against the state leadership”. Bani Yaghoub was informed about her sentence on June 8. She is going to file an appeal against the verdict.

Bani Yaghoub, journalist and human rights acitivist, runs the blog “We are journalists”. The blog takes a critical look at the situation in Iran. On June 22 the human rights organization “Reporters without borders” awarded her for her journalistic activities in [the German city of] Bonn.

Bani Yaghoub was not allowed to leave the country to attend the award ceremony on June 22. Her speech (see below) was read out during the ceremony. She states that “more than 40 other journalists and bloggers are imprisoned in Iran” apart from herself. Some have been sentenced to six or even nine years imprisonment, others are facing similar sentences.

In 2009, Reporters without Borders (ROG) has counted 60 countries in which the internet is being censored – twice as many as the year before. The “Open Net Initiative” (ONI), supported by the renowned universities of Harvard, Oxford, Cambridge and Toronto, has counted about 40 countries. For comparison: In 2002 only two countries implemented restrictions of internet freedom, according to ONI.

About 120 bloggers are currently imprisoned world wide, among them 72 internet dissidents in China, says the report “Enemies of the Internet” that was published on Thursday.

“Dear Journalists and Bloggers from all over the world”

first of all, I would like to tell you that I am writing this note to you after I was recently sentenced to one year in prison – and banned from practicing journalism for 30 years – by the Islamic Republic of Iran’s Revolutionary Court. One of the reasons they named for handing me this harsh sentence was the articles I wrote on my weblog, the weblog that Reporters Without Borders chose as the best blog from among Deutsche Welle’s International Blog Awards, The BOBs. On this blog I wrote about people’s protests against the disputed presidential election in Iran last year.

Currently, more than 40 journalists and webloggers are imprisoned in Iran. Some of them have been sentenced to six or even nine years in prison, and still others are expecting similar court sentences. These prisoners did not commit any crime; they simply pursued the career and duties of a journalist.

One of these imprisoned journalists is my husband, Bahman Ahmadi Amouee. He was arrested during the post-election crisis. My husband was sentenced to 34 lashes, along with seven years and four months in prison. His greatest crime was publishing critical articles about Mahmoud Ahmadinejad’s government on his personal weblog and in Iranian dailies. For one year now, he has been held in prison – alongside many other journalists – for no legitimate reason.

I would like to thank Reporters Without Borders for awarding me this prize, and I would like to dedicate my prize to my imprisoned husband, Bahman, and to all imprisoned Iranian bloggers, especially Shiva Nazar Ahari. Thank you so much.”

Bani Yaghoubs Persian blog provides latest information on the situation in Iran, focusing on social and women-related issues, writes media service “Meedia”. “Zhila is a pioneer for freedom of opinion in her country”, said Lucie Morillon, head of the ROG department “New Media” during the proclamation of the winners of the “Best of the Blogs” competition.

According to ROG, more than one year after the contested victory of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in the presidential elections of 2009, the extent of repression and prosecution of critical voices in Iran is dramatic: More than 170 Iranian journalists and bloggers were arrested in the past 12 months. 38 of them are still in prison. More than 100 media professionals left the Islamic Republic since the presidential elections

UN human rights chief Navi Pillay on Friday warned torturers that they could not escape justice even if they might benefit from short term impunity.
"Torturers, and their superiors, need to hear the following message loud and clear: however powerful you are today, there is a strong chance that sooner or later you will be held to account for your inhumanity," Pillay said.
"Torture is an extremely serious crime, and in certain circumstances can amount to a war crime, a crime against humanity or genocide," she added in a statement to mark Saturday's International Day for the Victims of Torture.
The High Commissioner for Human Rights urged governments, the United Nations and campaign groups "to ensure that this message is backed by firm action."
"No one suspected of committing torture can benefit from an amnesty. That is a basic principle of international justice and a vital one," Pillay added.
"I am concerned, however, that some states rigidly maintain amnesties that save torturers from being brought to justice, even though the regimes that employed them are long gone.
"As a result there are a number of well-established democracies that generally abide by the rule of law, and are proud to do so, which are in effect protecting torturers and denying justice," said Pillay.
That often, as a result, denied their victims reparations.
The UN human rights chief noted that more people were being prosecuted for torture every year, including recent prosecutions in Chile and Argentina for cases dating back to the 1970s and 1980s.
She also highlighted the looming verdict in Cambodia's war crimes tribunal on former Khmer Rouge prison chief Kaing Guek Eav, commonly known as 'Duch' which is due on July 26.
"There is one aspect of all this that should cause even the most ruthless and self-confident torturers to stop and think: in time, all regimes change, including the most entrenched and despotic.
"So even those who think their immunity from justice is ironclad can -- and I hope increasingly will-- eventually find themselves in court," Pillay added

It is a tale of two of Britain's finest universities, two highly-regarded Iranian students, two prolonged detentions without trial in the Islamic republic – and two very different responses.
Oxford PhD student Mohammadreza Jalaeipour, who campaigned for the opposition leader Mir Hossein Mousavi in 2009, was rearrested 10 days ago. Jalaeipour, researching the sociology of religion, was first detained almost exactly a year previously, shortly after Iran's disputed presidential election, as he and his wife Fatemeh Shams were boarding a flight to Dubai en route for the UK.
Jalaeipour, 27, spent 80 days in prison, more than 50 of them in solitary confinement at Tehran's notorious Evin prison. On his release on bail in September, Jalaeipour remained in Iran with his parents as his passport had been confiscated. Shams – despite warnings from the authorities to return home – is still in Oxford, where she is also studying.
On 14 June, her husband was informed by the authorities that he should go to a mosque to get his passport back. Instead, Jalaeipour came home with five plainclothes agents, who searched the house and confiscated his belongings before taking him away. It is not clear why he was rearrested since Iran's judiciary had previously declared his case closed. He is again being held in solitary confinement. "This is now a kidnap," Shams says.
Four days later, Professor Margaret MacMillan, warden of St Antony's College Oxford, wrote to Iran's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. "These proceedings are not worthy of the Islamic Republic and are inflicting great suffering on Mohammadreza, his wife and his family," MacMillan protested.
"Fatemeh has not only endured months of unhappiness at being separated from her husband but now suffers the added cruelty of receiving threatening and abusive emails from a group who hide behind the name of the Cyber Army of the Islamic Republic. I urge you to find who is responsible for these disgraceful attacks and put a stop to them."
Not surprisingly, perhaps, no answer has been received from Khamenei. But MacMillan's letter was reported by BBC Persian TV, which is widely watched in Iran. Shams is grateful for the support, including other public statements made by the university from the start.
It has been a very different story with Ehsan Abdoh-Tabrizi. The PhD student at Durham University has been in prison since mid-January after travelling to Tehran to visit his family.
He spent more than 50 days in solitary confinement and is now reported to be in poor health. He was not politically active but friends believe one reason for his arrest may be because his father, Hossein, manager of the banned reformist newspaper Sarmayeh, has been a critic of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, who claimed victory over Mousavi last summer. Some suspect he may have been under surveillance while still in Britain.
Until this week Durham refused even to acknowledge that Abdoh-Tabrizi had been arrested. Journalists who contacted the university faced stonewalling and warnings that any publicity could endanger him.
"Those Iranian students who tried to protest the university's inaction were either reprimanded privately or shunned," one friend complained. "Due to their lack of response to the arrest, the Iranian government felt no pressure to explain their miscarriage of justice," said another.
Colleagues at the University of Essex, where Abdoh-Tabrizi had done his MA, drew up a petition calling for his release, only to be warned by the Iranian embassy in London not to interfere in the country's "internal affairs".
Embarrassed Durham academics then followed suit, but the university warned that staff could only sign it "in a personal capacity", ensuring that institutional silence was maintained — in striking contrast to Oxford's action on behalf of Jalaeipour.
Durham finally issued a statement to the Guardian yesterday. It confirmed that, according to the Iranian embassy, Abdoh-Tabrizi is being held on charges relating to national security and damage to property during demonstrations on the Ashura holiday in December, when some 1,000 people were arrested.
"We take the safety and security of our students very seriously and made enquiries as soon as concerns were raised, but obtaining information from Iran proved to be extremely difficult," said Professor Anthony Forster, the pro vice-chancellor.
Abdoh-Tabrizi's friends dismissed the statement as disingenuous and claimed Durham's extreme reticence can only be explained by the university's links with the Iranian embassy and institutions such as the Mahdieh Charity Foundation in Qom and the Cultural Heritage Organisation of Iran in Tehran.
Durham is sensitive to – and rejects – such criticism, hinting darkly at political motivation by Abdoh-Tabrizi's supporters. "The university will continue to liaise with Ehsan's family and has, with advice and independently of any public campaigning or political context, written to the Iranian embassy in London," Forster's statement said.
"We are hopeful of a positive outcome, but will continue to monitor the issue carefully and review our position, ensuring that any action we undertake is in Ehsan's best interests," it concluded. "We will not be making any further comment at this delicate stage."

Iran jails Getty photographer for three years: website

Iran has sentenced a freelance photographer for Getty Images photo agency to three years in prison for taking pictures of 2009 election protests, an OPPOSITION website reported on Sunday.
‘Majid Saeedi was sentenced to three years in prison,' Kaleme.com, the website of OPPOSITION leader Mir Hossein Mousavi, reported without providing any more details.
Saeedi, an Iranian, was arrested in July 2009 along with another local photographer for sending pictures of protests against President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad's disputed re-election to foreign media.

Political prisoners in Evin Prison’s cellblock 350 have been banned from calling their families since yesterday. The telephone was their only form of communication with their families.
A cell in cellblock 350 used by political prisoners was also evacuated and given to non-political prisoners and authorities have decreased the number of political prisoners’ cells. This issue has made the cells crowded because they hold many more prisoners than their normal capacity. Currently about 30 to 36 political prisoners are kept in every cell and almost 1\3 of these prisoners are forced to sleep on the floor. Despite the severe heat, these cells lack minimum cooling appliances and because the cells hold more than their capacity, prisoners are subjected to intolerable pressure

RAHANA – On June 19, 2010, Godeleh Sazi workers in Sirjan (south of Iran, province of Kerman) continued their picket outside the main gate of the complex and asked the management to address their demands. The workers demanded to meet with the CEO, Mohammad Jalal Mo’ab, who is currently in Tehran on a trip.

According to a RAHANA reporter, there were altercations between the 400 striking workers and some of the factory managers. A number of workers were injured during clashes with the factory guards. There is still no information on the number or conditions of the injured workers. There are also reports that the city’s security officials held an emergency meeting on the afternoon of the same day.

The strike started on June 14th after the announcement of the results of the company’s hiring exams, which only 40 of the 500 workers passed. The striking workers have been employed for the last five years on a contractual basis to launch the complex; however after the complex was inaugurated by Ahmadinejad in April, they were told that they would be replaced by new workers who had passed the hiring exams. The situation became critical when it was announced that only 40 among the current workers had qualified to continue their employment.

On June 16th, the striking workers began holding daily gatherings outside the governor’s office. One worker told RAHANA, “We have not received any convincing answers from the city officials, therefore we will continue our strike until we receive a meaningful answer to our demands.”

Speaking on the condition of anonymity, the worker said that the city’s Intelligence and administrative authorities held a meeting with three representatives of the striking workers. According to the worker, “Not only did they fail to address the demands of the workers, but they also tried to intimidate the three representatives during the meeting.”

In the past few days, the city’s Intelligence authorities have repeatedly contacted the local newspapers and ordered them not to cover the news of the strike. An informed source told RAHANA that the sensitivity of the Intelligence authorities over the strike is because the complex was opened by Ahmadinejad two months ago and the authorities believe that news of a strike would lead to the weakening of the government’s image. One striking worker, however, dismissed the idea that the strike is politically motivated and said, “We are not involved in politics. Our only demand is to keep our jobs. Who is going to answer to our families when we lose our job?”

An eyewitness told RAHANA that the representatives for the three workers left in protest after their demands were not addressed during the meeting with the city authorities. The gathering outside the governor’s office did not take place on Saturday, but the workers continued their strike.

Please be careful, the clip is graphic

The Ashura protests showed a more radicalized, programmed and guided style of protest than any other ones before it. At the same time the State controlled Bassidj and suppressive garrisons were also on maximum alert and organisation being directly lead by the Supreme Leader himself.

There were how ever analysis sourced by Iranian state run sites and also elements working in social media on the internet that suggested unprecedented violence by the people to the suppressive agents hence leading to provocation of blood shed.
(They meant to conclude that protesters should not defend themselves against bullets and knives and cycles)
We like to deduct that having seen this clip and many others of the same protest, it is evident that the organised propaganda to depict the uprising as a provocation of violence (instead of self defence when is necessary ) is not a realistic one; in this clip people were shot and killed first by plain cloth agents ant the crowed only disarmed the aggressive agents amidst all excitement .

62,000 'badly veiled' women warned in Iran holy province

(AFP) - Iranian police have issued warnings to 62,000 women who were "badly veiled" in the Shiite holy province of Qom as part of a clampdown on dress and behaviour, a newspaper said on Monday.

Around "62,000 women were warned for being badly veiled" in the province of Qom, Tehran Emrouz newspaper quoted provincial police chief Colonel Mehdi Khorasani as saying.
It was unclear whether all the women issued with warnings were from Qom or the tally included travellers passing through the province.

Khorasani said police had also confiscated around 100 cars for carrying improperly dressed women, adding that "encouraging such relaxations are among the objectives of the enemy."
The newspaper did not say during which period the warnings were issued.
The population of Qom is more than one million, with most of them concentrated in the city itself which is Shiite Iran's clerical nerve-centre.

By law, women in the Islamic republic must be covered from head to foot, with their hair completely veiled, and social interaction is banned between men and women who are not related.
Iran is known particularly for summer-time crackdowns on improperly dressed women but the issue has sparked debate after hardline President Mahmoud Ahamdinejad said he "firmly" opposed the clampdown.

In a televised interview earlier this month, he said he was "firmly against such actions. It is impossible for such actions to be successful."

His remarks have drawn the wrath of fellow hardliners and several top clerics who have criticised him for opposing the police crackdown.

Iran's morality police have returned to the streets in past weeks, confiscating cars whose male drivers harass women, local media say, without clarifying what amounts to harassment.
The reports say the police or hardline militiamen have been stopping cars with young men or women inside to question their relationship.

The Islamic dress code for women is also being more strictly enforced.

(CNN) -- Iran is creating a new "internet police" force, the head of the country's security forces said Wednesday, according to the semi-official Fars news agency.
The force will "identify threats and remove them," Maj. Gen. Esmaeel Ahmadi Moghadam said.
Anti-government activists relied on websites like Twitter and YouTube to circulate information during last year's demonstrations against the re-election of hardline President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.
The internet police should be up and running "within the next couple of months," the security chief said.
He said the force was necessary because the "internet is relatively new and is so extensively used," so "unique and serious threats are felt by users and the society. Identifying these threats and removing them and passing new laws applicable in this space is part of an effort to prevent any harm."

The local head of the judiciary in the northern province of Mazandaran said six people were arrested by Intelligence Ministry agents in connection with an attempt by members of the opposition People’s Mojahedin (PMOI) to plant bombs in several cities in the province, the state-run Jahan news website reported on Saturday.
Hojjatoleslam Hossein Talebi told journalists that judicial officials in Ramsar had ordered the arrests, and further reports on the matter were expected.
The announcement came just days after Iran's Intelligence Minister, Hojjatoleslam Heydar Moslehi, claimed with much fanfare that two PMOI teams had been arrested while attempting to plant bombs in public places in the capital.
The PMOI in a statement last week denied categorically that its members had been arrested or that they had been attempting to plant bombs.
"These absolutely false claims reflect the clerical regime's delirium, which is increasingly desperate in confronting the rise in popular protests and the increase in support by the Iranian people for the PMOI. These futile attempts are designed to cover up the regime's growing crises and deepening internal rifts and reflect its inability to stop the nationwide uprising", it said.

Senior officials of the regime’s suppressive forces have voiced trepidation over protests by the courageous people and youths of Iran on June 20, and have launched extensive measures to prevent the uprising. Some of the measures include:

• Putting suppressive forces on high alert and stationing them in operations bases since June 19.

• Organizing briefing sessions by the Deputy Office of the Intelligence of the paramilitary Bassij on June 16 and June 19 for the regime’s intelligence agents. Basing the regime’s suppressive forces on June 19 was reviewed at these sessions. Officials at the meeting also voiced concern about the activities of supporters of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran (PMOI/MEK) on the occasion of June 20 and stressed the imperative for a heavier presence of suppressive forces.

• A meeting with the commander of the Sarollah Base of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and rank-in-file starting from the morning of Saturday and continuing into the afternoon.• The IRGC and Bassij operation to suppress the protests on June 20 is codenamed “Imam Mohammad Baqer.”

• The command operation of suppressive forces in the fourth district of Tehran is headed by Brig. Gen. Mehdi Sabbagh, who also commands the “Fatemeh Zahra” Brigade. The commanding unit controls 6 Bassij districts in the west of Tehran and Azadi Square. Sabbagh has been cracking down on demonstrators in 4th District in recent days. Hundreds of people have been arrested by his agents.

• Brig. Gen. Manouchehri, Deputy of Operations in 10th District (Meqdad), has been transferred to the 9th District after his hand was broken during clashes with courageous youths on June 12.

At 14:30, hundreds of courageous youths and people staged protests at Polytechnic University with chants of “death to dictator,” leading to clashes with the regime’s forces.

At 15:30 local time, hundreds of regime intelligence agents (protection office on campus) surrounded the area in front of the University of Tehran’s main gate and prevented people and students from entering the campus. At around noon, 150 demonstrators gathered under Tehran’s Hafez bridge and chanted “death to dictator” as State Security Forces (SSF) attacked the demonstration.

Fearing student protests and in order to prevent gatherings, the regime has closed metro stations in the vicinity of universities in Tehran since Sunday morning.

Streets and avenues around Kargar Shomali Street, where Neda Aqa Soltan was slain, were completely blocked off by intelligence and suppressive agents. The agents asked for identification cards from passersby and arrested a number of people. In the afternoon, anti-riot forces also joined other suppressive forces.

Behnam Ebrahimzadeh, an employee of a piping company in Shahr-e-Rey, is one of the most well-known activists against child labour and protecting the rights of street children. He is also a member of the Committee to Facilitate Creation of Free Labour Organizations. Ebrahimzadeh was arrested by agents of the Ministry of Intelligence on June 12, 2010. The latest news indicates that he is under crucial interrogation and in critical condition in Evin prison.

During his arrest, Ebrahimzadeh was brutally beaten by police forces. Two of his ribs were broken and his chest was badly wounded. Following the physical abuse, he was sent to Evin prison.

Last year on International Workers’s Day (May 1, 2009) Ebrahimzadeh and other workers were arrested in Laleh Park (Tehran) and sent to prison. They were released under heavy bail. Ebrahimzadeh’s file is still processing in court.

Previously, the Ministry of Intelligence has investigated and imprisoned Ebrahimzadeh’s family in an attempt to put more pressure on him.
The Islamic Republic of Iran attempts to conceal its systematic child abuse problems by putting pressure on children’s rights defendants. Behnam Ebrahimzadeh is imprisoned for defending the rights of children who are in the streets due to poverty. Ebrahimzadeh has been imprisoned so the government’s actions can be concealed.

Tehran, Jun. 20 - The leader of the Sunni dissident group Jundollah, Abdolmalek Rigi, was hanged at dawn on Sunday in Tehran's notorious Evin Prison, the Judiciary announced.
A court statement said since 2003 Jundollah had killed 154 members of the security forces and others and wounded 320.
It accused the group of having ties to the intelligence services of the U.S., Israel and several Arab states.
Despite Tehran's hyped-up claims that the Jundollah leader had been arrested after a sophisticated intelligence operation, observers say that he was handed over to Iran by Pakistani intelligence services in February.
Rigi's brother, Abdolhamid, was hanged on 24 May in Zahedan, provincial capital of Sistan-Baluchestan, after undergoing several months of interrogation and torture while in captivity
