Simultaneous with the presence of Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, president of the Iranian regime, at the United Nations, 20,000 people rallied outside the United Nations in New York to say that he is the enemy of Iranian people. Demonstrators described Ahmadinejad as a terrorist and his presence at the UN as an insult to the people of Iran and called for his expulsion from the world body.

Protesters called on the UN General Assembly, the Security Council and all UN member states to condemn the regime as the worst violator of human rights in the world today and set up a special tribunal to bring to trial the leaders of this regime for crimes against humanity, including the execution of 30,000 political prisoners. They also called on them to expel the representatives of the clerical regime from the United Nations and said that Iran’s seat at the UN must be rendered to the Iranian Resistance, which, in the current circumstances, represents the Iranian people.

A number of distinguished American and international personalities including Rudolph Giuliani, US presidential candidate and former New York Mayor, and John Bolton, former US Ambassador to the United Nations and Assistant Secretary of State, addressed the rally.
By Allan Chernoff, CNN

New York (CNN) -- They journeyed to New York from faraway places, they said, to give voice to those who are silenced in their homeland.

They wanted to stand their ground before the United Nations, where Mahmoud Ahmadinejad was addressing the General Assembly. They called the Iranian president a terrorist. And a murderer.

"Azadi! Azadi!" they roared in Farsi. Freedom.

"Hazer! Hazer!" they chanted. Ready.

"We are ready for change," Moslem Filabi, a former Iranian wrestling champion, told the protesters gathered across the street from the United Nations at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza.

One of them was Fateh Khazri, who said her father was imprisoned in Iran for alleged ties to dissidents. She had traveled from London, England, to state her opinion.

"Ahmadinejad is a terrorist. Ahmadinejad is a murderer. He must leave Iran," she said.

Mahyar Harsini came from Cologne, Germany. "People in our country, they don't have a voice," Harsini said. "We are here to talk for them because they are not able to."

The protest organizers, a coalition of Iranian-American groups who have gathered each time Ahmadinejad has visited the United Nations, are broadcasting the protest over satellite television and on the internet, allowing people in Iran to see the opposition to the Iranian regime.

"How can America let such a person into this place?" wondered Kamal Bayog of Luxembourg. "He must be expelled from the U.N."

Some demonstrators wore hats embroidered with the slogan, "Viva Rajavi" and carried pictures of Maryam Rajavi, leader of the National Council of Resistance of Iran, who lives in exile.

Purple flags and balloons supporting Rajavi's opposition floated overhead as she addressed the rally via satellite from Paris, France.

"I urge the U.N. to condemn the Iranian regime and their crimes, the worst humanitarian crimes," she said. "Those of you here are the brave ones representing Iran. Ahmadinejad is the enemy of Iran."

The crowd responded: "Rajavi, yes. Ahmadinejad, no."

Other demonstrators wore bloodied prison uniforms and nooses around their necks, symbols of the repression under the Islamic regime, they said. One woman sat surrounded by stones, used in Iran as a method of execution.

Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani also addressed the crowd. "You and your cause," he said, "are the best hope for Iran."

By Colleen Long (CP) – 44 minutes ago

NEW YORK, N.Y. — Former New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani told cheering Iranian-Americans outside the United Nations on Thursday that they have the support of "all democratic people."

The lively but controlled group protesting against Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad's United Nations appearance, appeared on Dag Hammarskjold Plaza, across the street from the U.N. complex. Several other organizations were holding separate protests there.

The protest was organized by the National Council of Resistance of Iran. The France-based umbrella group includes the People's Mujahedeen Organization of Iran, which was removed from the European Union's list of banned terrorist groups last year. It remains on the U.S. list, though the group is trying to persuade the American government to stop classifying it as a terrorist organization.

A couple thousand demonstrators turned out, though organizers claimed the number was much higher. The protesters held purple balloons; red, white and green Iranian flags; and red, white and green umbrellas to ward off the hot autumn sun. Some had confetti. There was a huge papier-mache replica of Ahmadinejad's head with a nuclear missile strapped to the back. Many wore purple, which one of the organizers, Ali Safavi, called "the colour of democracy."

Some signs decried adultery stonings, while others said "Down with the Islamic Republic of Iran" and "Off the List," a reference to the exile list.

"Your goals are our goals," Giuliani said. "They are the goals of all democratic people. You want to see freedom of religion ... of the press.

"We must confront tyrants, oppressors, bullies and terrorists as early as possible," he said, prompting even louder cheers.

"I am here to be the voice of the opposition for Iran," said participant Neda Farhan, who came with a group from Washington. "In the election, many young people were arrested and they are still in prison and we must fight for their rights."

The protesters voiced support for Maryam Rajavi, head of the National Council of Resistance of Iran — and some carried posters with her picture.

The protest featured a kind of play with three women in prisoner uniforms being hanged and man being beaten by a man in a military uniform, all under the eye of an actor wearing an Ahmadinejad mask. The play acted out in the plaza was also being shown on a large video screen. They played audio of screams of people who sounded like they were being tortured and beaten.

None of the Iranian-American protesters questioned wanted to give their names, saying they feared putting their relatives in danger.

"It's a shameful day for New York, a shameful day for the USA," said retired Swedish teacher Osborn Hommstramd, who carried two signs, one reading "Iran hangs children," and the other, "Iran stones their women."

The protest was peaceful, and 40 to 50 police officers watched nearby
