In the lead-up to the one year anniversary of the 2009 disputed presidential election and the ensuing protests, Kazem Rezaei, Abdoljalil Rezaei, Hamdollah Namjou, Esmaeil Jalilvand, and Younes MirHosseini, five well-known student activists in Shiraz University have been expelled.

The five student activists were expelled despite the fact that Mollabashi, the Deputy in Charge of Student Affairs at the Ministry of Science, had previously announced that the only penalty for them would be suspension.

Additionally, Alma Ranjbar and Hadi Alam were forced to transfer to another university, while universiy officials have prevented Arash Roustaei and Mohsen Zarrin Kamar, students who have completed the required units for college graduation, from receiving their degrees.

The expelled students had no academic problems, thus the expulsions were solely based on political reasons.

The students were suspended for one or two semesters for commemorating Student Day on December 7, 2009, blasphemy, and disturbing the university.

In their first and only summon to the Ministry of Science, the students were told that Shiraz University had requested that change their university and major and that Abdoljalil Rezaei, the former Secretary of the Shiraz University Islamic Association be expelled.

Rezaie has not accepted any of the accusations and believes that his expulsion was unjust and unlawful. Since the fall of 2008, many students have been detained by security officials or summoned to the Revolutionary Court. They have been released on bail and are currently awaiting their sentence.

Since the June 12th disputed presidential election, security has increased in the campus. Regrettably, no one has taken responsibility for the attack by anti-riot police in Shiraz University that took place on the same night as the raid on the dormitory of the University of Tehran.

Many university students have been detained, summoned to the Judiciary, or have been given severe penalties by the Disciplinary Committee. A student activist in Shiraz University has reported that “in addition to the apparent dissent within society, the recent dilemma is to a great extent caused by Karparvar (the deputy of student affairs) and Mohammadi (director of campus security) who have ties with the security forces and fulfill their requests.

Although many students have been given disciplinary verdicts in recent years, the number of expulsions has greatly increased since the Cultural Revolution.

One of the expelled students stated that after suspensions, detainments, and the adoption of the “star-rating system” for politically active students, and the dismissal of the professors, expulsion from universities is the third phase of the second Cultural Revolution.

He believes that such sentences were given to scare off other students from protesting as the anniversary of the disputed presidential election is approaching. However, such tactics are no longer working and will only add to the people’s discontent and prove the illegitimacy of the regime.

He further believes that contrary to the past when the government claimed that Iran’s universities enjoyed a considerable amount of freedom, the regime is no longer pretending since the Minister of Science has publicly threatened college students.

The student is hoping that the vast presence of people on June 12th will deplore the regime’s plans.

Background

On 13 June 2009 it was announced that President Ahmadinejad had won the presidential election. Hundreds of thousands of Iranians were subjected to draconian restrictions by the Iranian authorities of the right to freedom of expression.

Access to the Internet was and continues to be blocked or severely disturbed. Since the announcement of the election results, it is prohibited for Iranian newspapers to publish information about the unrest. Foreign journalists were banned from the streets, and some foreign reporters were expelled from the country.

According to Amnesty International representatives investigations, at least 2277 people were arrested by the police or the Basij militia during and after demonstrations across the country since 12 June 2009. This includes information from those close to well-known political figures such as Mir Hossein Mousavi, Mehdi Karroubi, and former President Khatami, who supported the campaign of Mir Hossein Mousavi.

Even human rights defenders and journalists have been arrested. On 16 June 2009, the lawyer and human rights defenders in detention Abdolfattah Soltani (UA-160/2009 of 19 June 2009). Journalist Saeed Hajjarian, who formerly belonged to the City Council of Tehran, and was advisor to former President Mohammad Khatami, was arrested on 16 June 2009. Since an attack in 2000, he is confined to a wheelchair. He was transferred from Evin prison to hospital on 3rd July 2009 (UA-159/2009 of 18 June 2009). On 24 June 2009 70 university graduates were arrested as they left a meeting with Mir Hossein Mousavi in his office. All but four were later released.

Among the detainees are Dr Ghorban Behzadian, the campaign manager of Mir Hossein Mousavi, and Ardeshir Amir Arjomand, a law professor at the Shahid Beheshti University. Hundreds more people were arrested during the demonstrations against the election results by security forces using excessive force. Many were beaten and killed by authorities. A total of 20 deaths were originally claimed. The actual number of fatalities, however, is far higher.

The journalist Issa Saharkhiz was arrested on 4 July 2009. Amnesty International considers him a prisoner of conscience, held in prison solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression - including his opinion about the presidential elections. Issa Saharkhiz is in danger of being tortured or mistreated in other ways.

The journalist had supported the presidential candidate Mehdi Karroubi in the election campaign. He was arrested on the 4th July in northern Iran and taken to an unknown place. Although his family and his lawyer have been trying to get information about the arrest of Issa Saharkhiz and his place of detention, the Iranian authorities failed to provide this information for a considerable time. It is now known He has been held at Evin Prison since July 4, 2009.

Sign the PETITION

We the petitioners and friends of Issa Saharkhiz respectfully request that His Excellency Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon petition the Iranian government and His Excellency Ayatollah Sayed 'Ali Khamenei for the immediate release of journalist Issa Saharkhiz because, he is a nonviolent political prisoner being held in jail solely for the peaceful exercise of his right to freedom of expression.
