CHRR - Student educational rights activist Zia Nabavi was severely beaten and held in solitary confinement for 48 hours upon arriving to Karoun prison in Ahvaz (capital of the Iranian province of Khuzestan). Zia Nabavi is the spokesperson for the Right to Education Council.
The Committee of Human Rights Reporters stated that Nabavi was transferred to the security ward in Karoun prison. Reports indicate that the prison has poor food and hygiene conditions. He is permitted one meal for breakfast and one for dinner. He was allowed to use the hygienic facilities once during the first two days. There is only one toilet and one bath in the security ward and the temperature is extremely hot. There is no ventilation system and the prisoners do not have proper access to drinking water.
Zia Nabavi has been deprived of continuing his education. He was detained on June 15, 2009 and sentenced to 15 years in prison. The Appeals Court reduced the sentence to 10 years exile in Izeh prison. His exile sentence in Izeh was later changed to Karoun prison.
Majid Dorri, another activist for the Right to Education Council, was also transferred to Karoun prison. Human rights and educational rights activist Shiva Nazar Ahari was sentenced to six years exile in Izeh prison.
