Tear Gas Used On 14 February Causes Severe Symptoms Among Protesters
Shadi Sadr, an Iranian human rights lawyer, told the International Campaign for Human Rights in Iran that at least three people who participated in the 14 February protests have expressed that the tear gas used against the protesters was different from that used previously. According to the three individuals, when they returned home after exposure to the tear gas, they suffered symptoms such as severe nausea, vomiting blood, and loss of voice and their symptoms have not yet subsided.
According to an opinion issued by the Iranian Armed Forces Legal Office, though use of tear gas is not considered a crime, “any type of bodily injury to others which according to Islamic Penal Code is recognized eligible for payment of Diya [blood money] or Qisas [retribution], is considered a crime and it may be pursued in qualified judicial courts. Type of the instrument used in creating the bodily harm is irrelevant to whether or not a crime has taken place”.
“I know of three people who are suffering from pains which were unprecedented as compared to the previous occasions. One of them had severe nausea and vomited blood, to the point where he was seen by a doctor and has had to take tests. One of them continues to have no voice through today and cannot be heard even 10 centimeters away. All three are suffering from severe muscular pains and cramps,” Shadi Sadr told the Campaign. The distinguished Iranian lawyer also said that other people who attended the 14 February gatherings have confirmed the symptoms of this tear gas through her Google Reader. A source reliable to Ms. Sadr told her, “My friend told me today that she and at least three other people are suffering from body aches, sore throat, and severe cold-like symptoms.” They also reported that they were previously exposed to tear gas, but they had never experienced such symptoms before.
The referenced individuals have stated that substances in the tear gas used on 14 February were different. After exposure to the tear gas, none of these individuals were able to leave their homes due to severe pain, nausea, and other physical symptoms, and they have had to stay home. In order for human rights organizations to follow up on bodily harm caused by tear gas used on 14 February 2010, Shadi Sadr recommended that they see physicians and take blood tests which would show the effect of harmful substances on their body. Political prisoner denied treatment for cancer is on verge of death
According to reports, the pancreas cancer of political prisoner Mohsen Dokmehchi has spread to his liver and has left him on the verge of death but Intelligence Agency interrogators and Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Dolat Abadi have prevented him from being hospitalized to receive treatment.
This jailed Bazaar merchant was inflicted with pancreas cancer six months ago. After four months of being denied treatment, his cancer became more advanced and he suffered severe pain.
Prison officials were finally forced to take him to a hospital in Tehran after his condition became critical. Doctors carried out an urgent operation which was unsuccessful. They stressed that he had to receive chemotherapy to prevent the spread of the cancer to other organs. Months after the doctors’ recommendation, intelligence agents and the Tehran Prosecutor are still denying him chemotherapy.
On February 14, Dokmehchi’s condition once again deteriorated and he was taken to the hospital. He was shackled while in critical condition and was even chained to the hospital bed while 3 guards watched over him around the clock. The doctors learned that the cancer had spread to his liver and that he was on the verge of death. Intelligence agents and the Tehran Prosecutor are still preventing him from receiving chemotherapy.
This is while he is suffering from severe pain and his doctors have even stressed in a letter that Mr. Dokmehchi has to undergo chemotherapy for six months under his family’s care and a medical examiner has said that his illness is untreatable and that he is unable to tolerate detention.
During this time, his family has gone to the prosecutor’s office every day to request his transfer to the hospital but their attempts have so far been futile and the Prosecutor’s Office tells them they are waiting on an answer from the Intelligence Agency on him being granted a medical leave from prison. This is while Tehran Prosecutor Abbas Jafari Dolat Abadi has the last say on this issue but refuses to give straight answers to Mr. Dokmehchi’s family. Political prisoner denied treatment despite suffering from painful tumor
According to reports, political prisoner Hassan Tarlani who has been suffering from a tumor which has grown in the lower section of his stomach is in a poor health but Intelligence Agency interrogators have denied him medical attention. This 23 year old student who has been sentenced to serve his 10 year prison term in Kerman Prison is suffering from severe pain and is even unable to rest because of the pain.
It is still not clear if the tumor is benign or malignant because he has not been checked by a specialist doctor. This student has been sent to the infirmary despite the fact that prison doctors have announced that they do not have the necessary facilities to assess the nature of the tumor or the facilities to treat it.
Tarlani’s father, who has to go to Kerman every month from Tehran to see his son from behind a glass partition for 20 minutes, can only ask about his son’s condition during this short visit. He has gone to various institutions to follow up his son’s treatment and for them to carry out the necessary examinations to assess the nature of the tumor but he has only heard empty promises and no measures have been carried out for his treatment. Tarlani’s family is very concerned for his health.
At least three political prisoners have been suspiciously inflicted with tumors in prison. Two of these political prisoners had malignant tumors. Political prisoner Alborz Qasemi passed away in prison last year after being denied cancer treatment and jailed Bazaar merchant Mohsen Dokmehchi is currently suffering from cancer but has been denied treatment.
