Human Rights Activists in Iran
More than 60 female students of the Qom Free University have been summoned to the Disciplinary Committee since April.
According to reports, after the School of Humanities was transferred to a new building in Pardisan, students have been subjected to increased pressure to the extent that more than 1000 female students have received notifications (for so-called improper veiling) from the Protection Department.
Protection Department agents have separated the entrances of male and female students in this university and stop most girls in the university entrance. The girls are insulted and humiliated and forced to wipe off their makeup. According to what is called ‘inobservance of Islamic norms’ they are given notices and if this is repeated, they are forced to give pledges.
This procedure has gone up to the point where in some cases, those who were deemed to be ‘improperly veiled’ were prevented from entering the university and summoned to the Disciplinary Committee.
According to reports, many of the 60 summoned students were student activists who were falsely charged with ‘promoting improper veiling’ amongst students and had to explain their intentions for choosing to dress a certain way (in the Disciplinary Committee). The Disciplinary Committee also issued sentences for them in their absence including suspension from education.
