According to reports from Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran, in retaliation to the growing physical abuse and torture in Gohardasht prison, solitary confinement prisoners gained control of their ward for a period of time.
On the evening of January 17th, prisoners Hossein Karimi and Mehrdad Saraei in Ward 2 of Gohardasht prison, Karaj (infamously known as the “doghouse”) disarmed two guards, amid being tortured. To regain control of the situation, Mirza Aghani (the main guard) and several other guards assaulted the prisoners using electric batons. Albeit, the prisoners successfully disarmed and locked Mr. Aghani inside one of the solitary confinement cells. They then had control of the torture chamber for some time.
To regain control, the prison guards dispersed tear gas in the air. The prisoners burned blankets to diffuse the effects of the tear gas. The confrontation reportedly continued for several hours. Consequently, the two prisoners were attacked heavily by the guards and they were sent back to the solitary confinement cells.
This is the third time that the prisoners have gained control of torture chambers at Gohardasht prison. Human Rights and Democracy Activists in Iran condemn the medieval methods of torture practiced in Gohardasht prison, and urge other human rights organizations to take immediate action to end the widespread systematic tortures practiced inside the Islamic Republic’s prisons.
