Zia Nabavi Sentenced to 15-Year Jail Term with 74 Lashes

Branch 26 of the Revolutionary Court, headed by Judge Pirabasi, sentenced Zia Nabavi, a profiled student marked with star in his academic records and a spokesman for the Right to Education Defense Council, to a 15-year jail term combined with 74 lashes.

The total sentencing is broken into three years for gathering and collusion to undermine national security; one year for spreading propaganda against the regime; one year for disturbing the public peace, and; 74 lashes for antagonizing public opinion, as well as ten years for his association with the Mojahedin Khalgh Organization (MKO), which must be served in city of Izeh’s prison, located in Kerman province.

During his trial, Mr. Nabavi strenuously refuted his association with the MKO, and stated that the reason the court has issued such a sentencing is the membership of a few of his family members in MKO’s Ashraf base, situated inside Iraq.

According to Mr. Nabavi’s lawyer, the main charge against his client was his participation in a street march that had been held on June 15.

During Mr. Nabavi’s detention in section 209 inside Evin Prison he was subjected to physical assaults by his interrogators on several occasions.
